water purification methods

There are numerous water purification methods here is a description of some of the most popular ones.

1. Clarification- it is a multi step process that reduces turbidity and suspended matter.

2. Lime treatment- One of the more popular water purification methods used to precipitate hardness in water to clarify it.

3. Disinfection- Mostly done with the addition of chlorine. It is the preferred water purification method worldwide.

4. pH adjustment- this is done to prevent corrosion of water pipes which would result in the dissolution of lead from the pipes into the water

5. Dispersants- These are added to disrupt scale formation preventing growth of precipitate crystals.

6. Filters- There are a number of these each with a distinct function I.e. sand, neutralizing, oxidizing and cartridge filters among others.

7.

Water Softening- Removes soluble iron and scale forming calcium and magnesium from water

8. Deionization- This makes use of synthetic resins and is usually used on pre-filtered water. This is one of the more expensive water purification methods as it produces extremely high quality water in terms of ions

9. Distillation-  It is the collection of condensed steam as most contaminants do not vaporize. It needs careful temperature monitoring.

10.  Electrodialysis and Electrodialysis reversal- Make use of semi permeable ions based on charge and reduce the ions in the water.

11.  Reverse Osmosis- Type of cross flow filtration. It removes almost all organic compounds.
